Kilwa Tanzania is in Lindi region and one of the 6 districts in the region. It is bordered by Indian Ocean on the East, Pwani region on the North and Lindi rural district on the South. Kilwa is known for its history.

Kilwa Ruins: You can see the Great Mosque, the mosque is considered to be the largest in the East African coast. You can also see, it has domed chambers, monolithic pillars, water tanks, and slabs for prayers. You also see the Great House; the remains of a residential complex. This group of 3 inter-connected dwellings, with sunken courtyards and numerous rooms. It gives an insight into the lives of Kilwa’s wealthy inhabitant during the 14th to 16th centuries, for you to see.

Small domed Mosque: you can see a small mosque with a domed and vaulted roof. It is originally decorated with glazed Islamic bowls set in the plaster-work Makutani Palace. Makutani is a large enclosure surrounded by a defensive wall as you can see. A fortified palace dominates the area. It was built to protect the Sultan and his family from Omani aggression during the 18th Century. Makutani means where the big walls are. Gereza (Kilwa ‘s fort) which was built by Portuguese and later re-built by the Omani Settlers from Zanzibar in the early 19th Century. It is dominating the view of the island from far Husuni Kubwa: these extensive ruins are probably the remains of a grand palace and trading complex built by the Sultan Al-Hassan bin Sulaiman, Kilwa’s greatest builder in the early 14th Century.

Day 1:

Dar Kilwa by car Leave Dar-es-salaam early morning for Kilwa, Drive to Kilwa Kivinje to see the Germans and Arab Buildings before heading to Kilwa Masoko for relaxing on the beach or snorkelling; accommodation at kilwa sea view resort.

Day 2 & 3:

Kilwa Kisiwani and Kilwa Kivinje excursions Activities in Kilwa, include excursions to the historical ruins in Kilwa Kisiwani, local guides give tours of the ruins and arrange dhow tours afternoon return to the resort for staying at leisure. Accommodation at Kilwa Sea View resort. The KILWA SEAVIEW RESORT (MBUYUNI) set up on a cliff overlooking the Kilwa Masoko Bay. The restaurant and bar with its natural palm thatched roof, built around an old Baobab tree and our stoned bandas in African style.

All have a view towards the island of Kilwa Kisiwani with its 14th century ruins. The resorts 250 meter sandy beach invites swimmers, snorkelers & relaxers.

Day 4:

Drive back to Dar-es-salaam Early morning breakfast and then start driving back to Dar-es-salaam. Arrival at around 1400 hours.

There are daily schedule flights from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Kilwa Masoko and return.

By Vehicle:

An 6 to 8 hour trip from Dar es Salaam via Nangurukuru to Kilwa Masoko.
