Waterbuck Safaris Limited supports the communities in Tanzania in multiple capacities. We support the child welfare in Tanzania via the Malaika Kids Foundation.

About Malaika Kids

Malaika Kids seeks to give most vulnerable and orphaned children in Tanzania a sustainable future. They may have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS or other diseases or left homeless due to poverty or disability. We offer these children a real home, where they can feel safe, eat regular meals and just be children again and strive to educate them to become responsible citizens capable of supporting themselves in the future. Our first priority is to look for (distant) family members for the orphaned child. We look into their background to see if we can reunite them with family members. Families are often willing to take their nieces, nephews or grandchildren in. We therefore make enormous efforts to locate family of any child brought to us. If we do find family members who are willing and suitable to take in an orphaned child, we place the child with them. It’s often necessary to offer some form of support to help the family that takes the child in. We offer them monthly food packages, educational and health support. We regularly monitor the physical, psychological and educational welfare of the child. Of all the children brought to us, more than 50% eventually end up in the Relatives Support Program. We believe that placement with the family is the best solution for orphans. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to place children with their family. For the children who we cannot place with families, we send them to our Children’s Village in Mkuranga where they wil grow up in family groups within a local community.

Project Description

Our Children’s village consists of 12 family houses, a pre school (attended by children from Malaika Kids and from the local community), classrooms for remedial teaching, a computer room, a library, sports ground, a pharmacy. So far, 8 houses are furnished and so we can accommodate upto 80 children. 5 boys and 5 girls, varying in age between 1 to 18 years live in a house with a ‘mother’ who raises them. In this way, we try to recreate a family environment whereby the older children can help the younger ones. We encourage a family bond to develop and the welfare of these children is our primary concern. Several materials are needed in order to run the village.
